The retro Jump Blues quartet Madison Red and the Band That Time Forgot is slated to rock The Flatted Fifth Blues & Barbecue in Bellevue, Iowa on Saturday, May 6 from 8 to 11 pm.  The band is in the midst of a tour promoting its new record 21st Century Blues and Ballads, it first all-original CD release.

The new disc’s most notorious tune is “Jocko’s Rocket Ship,” a veritable musical documentary about an infamous Madison “coke” bar, but there are plenty of other delights in this nine-song collection including a record number of 8-bar blues, and several ballads, both celebratory (“Reefer Dan”) and romantic (“Age of Reason”).  “My background is in comic books and movie criticism,” says guitarist Tom Flinn, who graduated from Columbus High in Waterloo and had a hand in writing all nine tunes, “so I have a narrative bent.  I wanted these songs to tell stories, however elliptically.”  In 21st Century Blues & Ballads the group has taken elements from a diverse group of classic 20th Century song forms and creatively applied them to contemporary subjects.   Check out one of the band’s blues-drenched offerings here   .

Led by flame-haired vocalist (and keyboard player) Megan Levy (aka “Madison Red”), The Band That Time Forgot is a swinging quartet that specializes in playing classic jump blues from the likes of T-Bone Walker, Louis Jordan, Charles Brown, Wynonie Harris, and Johnny Moore along with danceable Chicago-style blues from artists like Junior Wells, the Kinsey Report, and Gary Primich.  Here’s what Tom Radal said about the band in the Wisconsin Blues Society Newsletter: “On Saturday, July 6th at Oshkosh’s Sawdust Days several bands put on impressive performances.  Particularly interesting was a new group out of Madison who brought and interesting brand of 1930s, 40s, and 50s jump and swing music to the stage.  Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Louis Jordan, Tampa Red, and Wynonie Harris tunes got great treatments long with some sharp as a tack renditions of Hollywood Fats and Jimmy Rodgers tunes. “
